Mitrano Removal Services' Shirley location
Shirley waste removalcontractorMitrano RemovalServiceshas been fined $38,480 for failing to promptly notify state officials about a 30-gallon oil spill and a delay in cleaning up the site.
According to the state Department of EnvironmentalProtection(MassDEP), a Mitrano Removal Services vehicle last May released about 30 gallons of hydraulic oil during work at the Bromfield School in Harvard, as well as on a public street between the construction site and company offices.
The spill, was caused after a hydraulic line on the truck ruptured, causing the oil to spill onto the school parking lot and into a nearby catch basin.
The truck was driven back to the company's Shirley offices without notifying school officials or MassDEP.
A citizen notified the Harvard Fire Department about two hours later, anda contractorwas hired to perform a cleanup.
In an agreement, the company is required to provide training to employees about the appropriate response to such incidents, sign a contract with an on-call cleanup contractor and pay the $38,480 fine in full. Reprinted with permission of Worcester Business Journal Order Number 61102077784
Wow, that's an expensive fine
The $38,480 fine is only the tip of the iceberg. We're guessing the spill cleanup contractor charged at least $10,000 for its services. So, that's close to $50,000 for a 30-gallon hydraulic spill....that $1,666.67 per gallon.
Not to mention the bad publicity. OUCH.
BUT, this could have all been avoided for $245
How? By simply having a case of SmooshKit brand compact oil and fuel spill kits tucked away behind the seats of their trucks and equipment on site.
In the photo below, you can see a case of 5 SmooshKits that each absorb 7.7 gallons of oil or fuel (38.5 total gallons). This would have easily handled the hydraulic spill the contractor suffered and minimized cleanup costs...and most likely avoided the fine.
